Robert Downey Jr. joins HTC as global smartphone ambassador

In somewhat of an unexpected move, rumor has it that that Robert Downey Jr. has signed a $12 million two-year contract which positions the actor at spokesman and global smartphone ambassador for HTC. While a spokesperson for HTC claimed that the company had no new announcement regarding HTC’s marketing strategy, she did finish the comment by stating that the HTC One’s “all-metal design has drawn overwhelmingly positive feedback from media and consumers alike. Anyone with a penchant for metal should be able to appreciate its appeal.”

The marketing campaign surrounding the HTC One has already received great feedback, but adding Robert Downey Jr. into the mix will certain garner quite a bit of attention. According to Bloomberg, Robert Downey Jr. will be playing himself in the television, print and billboard ads, so don’t expect to see Iron Man or Sherlock Holmes trying to sell you an HTC One any time soon. We’re hoping HTC will reveal some additional details once they official announce the deal.

Do you think Robert Downey Jr. is the right man to be named HTC’s global smartphone ambassador?

  1. So stupid. HTC, stop being a copycat. Get back to your quietly brilliant self .. do you even know what that means anymore?!?! You’re going after big names now, so obviously not. Cheap sellout.

    1. Ever since marketing is on this planet, there have been movements to associate a specific product with a public figure. I don’t see it as a copy /cat movement. I see it as a marketing strategy. A well chosen one! Further more… let’s see it as a copy cat action. Than my question is why Jay-Z? Why a public figure from the music industry? Would it be because HTC has broken the limits of audio quality / concept / output for a mobile device and the competition didn’t?

Try for the future to have several pictures from several perspectives… 🙂

    2. Well the “quietly brilliant self” obviously wasn’t wroking, we all saw the numbers of last year. HTC is a company, they are suppose to sell stuff and make money, that’s selling out. We’re talking about a smartphone manufacturer here, not a singer or a band, selling out just don’t apply here.

    3. HTC officially dropped the “quietly brilliant” tag line earlier this year. It used to work since HTC phones we the clear choice since the competition was so far behind, but things are different now that Samsung dominated the airwaves with their lame commercials which show off useless features.

  2. Brilliant. Everyone knows him as Ironman even when he’s not in the suit. What better way to gain mass market appeal for an all metal phone. Plus if you watched the torture test from CNET you will learn that other than the speaker grilles popping of this phone is almost indestructible with everyday use. Getting dents on this all metal phone will be cool soon, just like buying worn out looking jeans. Best phone I have ever owned.

  3. Love it, Like this guy said^^ When you see Robert Downey. Jr you think of Iron Man (Suit is all metal) HTC One (Uni-Body is all metal). Love HTC’s new marketing strategy, Ben Ho did an amazing job!

  4. GUEST IRON MAN WAS THE BEST FOR SUCH MARKETING BUT YOU KNOW THE BAST MARKETING MAY BE POSITIVELY FAKE MARKETING LIKE SHOWING THE BUTTERFLY S WITH SNAPDRAGON 600 AND THEN BRINGING OUT A PHONE WITH SNAPDRAGON 800 TO COMPETE WITH THE UPCOMING S4.BETTER MAKE PEPLE EXPECT LESS AND GIVE THEM MORE IT ATTRACTS MORE ATTENTION THAN ANY OTHER THING SO IF HTC WANTS ONE OF THE BEST ACTORS OUT THERE THEN THEY SHOULD ASSOCIATE IT WITH THE BEST PHONE OUT THERE THE BATTERY ON THE BUTTERFLY S IS ALREADY WORTH SOMETHING

  5. I like it. Robert Downey Jr. is pretty recognizable right now, and everyone likes him.
