HTC rolling out a Windows Phone 7 update of their own?

I have to say I haven’t seen this yet, but it looks like hot on the heals of the Windows Phone Update to Nodo (no mater how you got it), HTC are pushing out a mysterious firmware update, that some early adopters, including people that used the Chevron.Updater method are starting to receive. OEM’s are able to push certain updates to devices that tweak and adjust how their hardware works with the Windows Phone 7 OS, as it currently exists on their hardware.

This may be a bit cheeky on HTC’s part, but you have to give them credit. This sort of response, from a major investor in this burgeoning OS, should probably be expected. It also puts paid to the fear mongering, cautious approach, that Microsoft have taken with the people that used the Chevron Update process.

The latest post from Microsoft’s Eric Hautala, in essence says, “we don’t know what will happen if you use these workarounds”.

But my strong advice is: wait. If you attempt one of these workarounds, we can’t say for sure what might happen to your phone because we haven’t fully tested these homebrew techniques. You might not be getting the important device-specific software we would typically deliver in the official update. Or your phone might get misconfigured and not receive future updates.

It’s even possible your phone might stop working properly. Bottom line: unsupported workarounds put you in uncharted territory that may void your phone warranty. We’ve made a lot of progress in recent weeks, so I urge you to please be patient for just a bit longer and wait for your official update notification to arrive

The HTC firmware update, will probably subject to all of the carrier limitations, unless your phone is unbranded/pure HTC device. If you have a carrier branded device, the HTC update will have to be approved before it rolls out to your phone. One thing that I do know, after applying the Chevron updater method, I see no ill affects on my HTC Mozart. In fact it seems rather faster, although, battery life has not been improved. All in all, maybe Microsoft’s fears have been allayed about the Chevron Updater, by the fact that this HTC update is rolling out, in spite of homebrew updating methods.
