Even though the first Android phone made its debut in the U.S. market, most U.S. carriers have taken months to offer the newer devices from HTC lately. I was expecting to see the same trend with the HTC desire and HTC Legend, but it’s looking like At&t and sprint are out to prove me wrong.
A source close to HTC has indicated that Google is working towards launching an At&t compatible version of the Nexus One through their website (similar to the current Nexus One that Google is selling with T-Mobile 3G bands). However, things aren’t that simple. The handset being prepped for At&t will actually be the new HTC Desire with Android 2.1 and the new version of HTC Sense. At&t is also planning on going a step further, by making the HTC Desire available in its retail locations (the Nexus One is only available through Google website and cannot be purchase from T-Mobile stores). The At&t HTC Desire will be getting a few exterior tweaks as well and should be available sometime in May of June of 2010.
The same source has also indicated that Sprint will be selling the HTC Legend as well, but could be branding the phone as the HTC Hero 2. A with the original Sprint HTC Hero, the HTC Hero 2 will undergo some design modifications. Sprint smoothed out the original Hero by chopping of the chin and toning down the handsets hard edges. Most people agree that the GSM Hero has a lot more personality than what Sprint is selling. Let’s hope they don’t muck things up too much and keep the uni-body aluminum frame of the HTC Legend intact. We weren’t able to find a release timeframe for the Sprint HTC Hero 2, but it shouldn’t be too far behind the May of June timeframe of the At&t HTC Desire.
