Nexus One invite-only launch on January 5th, full spec sheet leak

It’s no secret that the Nexus One is probably the most talked about phone over the past week and a half. The Android powered handset has been talked about on CNN, Fox News, the BBC, and every single tech blog on the net. Engadget has gotten word that the Nexus One will go on sale starting January 5th, but you’ll be lucky if you’ll be able to get your hands on one. The source claims that the Nexus One will only be available via “invitation” at launch, but will eventually roll out to T-Mobile for wider distribution. At this time, there’s no indication as to who will be getting the “invitation” from Google to purchase the Nexus One. It’s not farfetched to think that registered app developers might be included on the invitation list, but I’m sure that Google will be placing the phone into the hands of select members of the media/press as well.

Along with the launch details, a detailed spec sheet on the Nexus One has also surfaced.

The HTC made Nexus One will sport a Qualcomm QSD 8250 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM (that should be plenty of room for all your apps), 3.7 inch capacitive touch screen, HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100, 7.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up (that’s T-Mobile 3G support), 5 MP camera with auto-focus and LED flash, and measures in at 119mm high x 59.8mm wide x 11.5mm thick and only weighs 130 grams.

The spec sheet also highlights that the Nexus One will have a Teflon-coated back cover (similar to the GSM HTC Hero) and Android 2.1 will finally have support for GIF files. Some of you may be scratching your head at the last one. Apparently Google has gotten an earful from people who send and receive MMS with animated GIF images. I can’t remember the last time I next an MMS, but GIF support is something that ALL feature phones have had for year.
