HTC will not deliver on self-imposed HTC One Android 4.4 rollout deadline

Ladies and gentlemen, we have some bad news. Jason Mackenzie (President of HTC Americas) posted an open letter today on HTC’s site, announcing that “we know today that we will miss our self-imposed target” of delivering that HTC One Android 4.4 update before the end of January. When Android 4.4 was initially announced, HTC committed to delivering the update to the HTC One within 90 days. So far, the HTC One Developer Edition, Google Play Edition and unlocked models in the US and Europe have received the update, but the majority of HTC’s customers who have purchased the phone from service providers in the US and Europe are still waiting for the update.

Late last week, HTC made a lot of noise about the fact that the update for the HTC One had been handed over to T-Mobile, Sprint Verizon and AT&T here in the US with the expectation that certification of the update would be granted this week, followed by a quick OTA software rollout. That has not happened. Jason Mackenzie says that certification of the HTC One Android 4.4 update will take another “one to two weeks to complete each of the carrier versions of the HTC One.”

We’re disappointed to hear that HTC will not be delivering on its promise to update the HTC One within 90 days, but we commend them for being transparent about the process. Hopefully, we will be US service providers begin rolling out the HTC One’s Android 4.4 update late next week.

  1. What does we’ve learned a lot mean? How long have they been working with the carriers to update software? Has the process changed? You delivered the software to the carrier and didn’t allow them enough time to test and rollout. Don’t blame it on your just now learning how to navigate the carrier certification.

  2. Knowing that Sense and all needs to be integrated, I can wait a bit.

Certainly a better experience than with the Sensation 4G, the phone that updates left behind much too quickly

  3. Got my 4.2.2 update on Wednesday in Finland. Update is really worth waiting, nothing too major changes but oh my… Battery life is now pretty bad ass.
