HTC theme of the week: galvanized

Welcome to the HTC theme of the week, a series where I spotlight a theme I’ve found in the HTC Theme app, from a user I follow, a recommended theme, or eventually ones I’ve made myself. The Themes app runs on phones with HTC Sense 6 or higher and has a huge gallery of user contributed designs with custom wallpapers, icons, sounds and more.

This week’s theme is called galvanized and has that industrial look that comes with the relation to galvanized steel.

Galvanized theme pros

This theme is well rounded with a nice amount of attention to detail. If you pay attention to the app icons you will notice that each icon has several enhancements to them. First, is the squared with round edges overlay, then each app icon is shrunk with a vignette added so they fit nicely inside the thick bordered overlay, and finally a texture matching the theme is thrown into the mix. Of course there are the HTC and Google apps that were custom designed and look pretty nice too.

The weather and clock icons have matching textures fit well over the brown color scheme in BlinkFeed. These items sort of remind of the uniforms the teens were wearing in this year’s All American Bowl football game though those were more of a digital camo pattern.

There are several variations of the same wallpaper used throughout the theme and in the caller window there’s a lighter steel wallpaper.

Galvanized theme cons

The only item I felt was missing from this theme was custom sounds. Maybe the designer could have found some clanging metal sounds for notifications and maybe the sound of a saw cutting something for the alarm.

About the theme designer

Joe Wyatt has several designs in the gallery and like to mix it up with some unique clock numbers. He has a good understanding of adding an overlay to the app icons and providing a consistent design throughout the theme. Several of his other themes have the HTC logo in the background and would make a nice theme in the future. Good job Joe!

About my theme review criteria

When selecting themes to review in this column I look for themes that are complete and look like they have a lot to offer.

So what does a complete theme look like?

A complete theme has a collection of wallpapers, as many custom app icons as possible with the rest styled and/or textured, custom weather and clock icons, custom soft keys, modified keyboard, custom fonts, and unique sounds.

That’s a lot of features, but to me, that encompasses a theme with all the bells and whistles. Not all themes I review hit all the marks, but they at least have several of the items mentioned above. I do this in an effort to show you the creativity of the designers uploading to the HTC Theme app.
