The HTC Exodus, the company’s first blockchain smartphone, has been unveiled and is now up for pre-order. If you were expecting the HTC Exodus to be somewhat different than other Android smartphones, you’ll be disappointed to learn that the device isn’t far off from the HTC U12+. The HTC Exodus is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage with a 6-inch HD+ display, 3,500 mAh battery, and IP68 dust and water resistance. On the back, you get two 16-megapixel cameras with two 8-megapixel cameras up front as well.
What sets the HTC Exodus apart from other Android smartphones is a secure wallet partition that is “protected from the Android OS.” The wallet can be used to store cryptocurrency and tokens for games like CryptoKitties.
Since losing your phone is a lot easier than losing your cryptocurrency wallet, HTC has devised a social key recovery mechanism which allows you to keep recovery details on the devices of a few trusted friends though HTC’s key management app. HTC is also opening the system up to third-party developers who would want to make their own key apps for the HTC Exodus.
The HTC Exodus will be available in 34 major markets across the globe starting in December for 0.15 BTC or 4.78 ETH (roughly $960 USD). That’s right, you will need to buy the phone using cryptocurrency. While we know there’s still a lot of hype around cryptocurrency, we’re not sure how well the HTC Exodus will actually sell.
Is the HTC Exodus a device you’ll be picking up this holiday season?
