HTC Exodus is HTC’s first blockchain smartphone

HTC has announced the HTC Exodus, a blockchain smartphone which will “support the entire blockchain system.” The specifications and pricing of the HTC Exodus have not been revealed, but HTC plans to create a native blockchain network with its Exodus smartphones which would enable free direct cryptocurrency trading with peers. The company claims that the HTC Exodus will also deliver decentralized applications (DApp), cold wallet storage directly on the device and secure communications.

HTC’s Phil Chen, the mind behind HTC’s Vive, is leading the HTC Exodus project and has been given the title of Decentralized Chief Officer within the company.

“Through Exodus, we are excited to be supporting underlying protocols such as Bitcoin, Lightning Networks, Ethereum, Dfinity, and more. We would like to support the entire blockchain ecosystem, and in the next few months we’ll be announcing many more exciting partnerships together.”

While it’s unclear what the market is for a blockchain smartphone, HTC isn’t the first to announce such a device. Sirin Labs announced the Finney blockchain smartphone in 2017 and is hoping to launch the device this fall. Sirin Labs is hoping to sell at least 1 million units of its $1,000 smartphone within the first year. If Sirin Labs is expecting to sell that many devices, HTC (a trusted brand within the smartphone community) should be able to match those sales numbers as well.
