HTC U12+ leak reveals photos, price and questionable specs

We know pretty much everything there is to know about the upcoming HTC U12+, but a new leak reveals a few new details about the phone and one other detail which throws into question the legitimacy of the leak itself.

Let’s start off with the new details. According to a leaked image of the HTC U12+’s retail box, the phone will be equipped Qi Wireless Charging, Quick Charge 4+, OIS for the front and rear-facing cameras, Hi-Res Audio and a staggering 8GB of RAM. Other specs which have already been shared through previous leaks include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, a microSD card slot, 12MP dual-camera with an f/1.5 lens, 8MP front-facing camera, Edge Sense 2, IP68 dust and water resistance, dual-SIM card support, NFC and a fingerprint sensor which is mounted on the back of the phone.

Based on these specs, the HTC U12+ would be a monster. It would be the first device on the market with dual-camera sensors on the front and back – both with optical image stabilization. Quick Charge 4+ and Qi Wireless Charging are a nice touch as well, but the 8GB of RAM would put the U12+ over the top, allowing it to beat out pretty much every Android phone on the market when it comes to multi-tasking.

The leak also claims that the HTC U12+ will sell for 6,000 Yuan in China, roughly $950 USD. HTC’s devices in the US typically sell for 10-15% less than they do in China which means the phone would have a sticker price between $800 and $850 if/when it shows up on store shelves in the US. THat’s in line with what Samsung is charging for the Galaxy S9+, but HTC’s device would definitely deliver more bang for your buck.

Unfortunately, the leak also claims that the phone will sport a 5.5-inch QHD+ display. The display size matches that of the HTC U11 from last year, but recent leaks have all stated that the HTC U12+ would feature a 5.99-inch display – similar to that of the HTC U11+.

Personally, I’d prefer the HTC U12+ to have a smaller display, but it’s hard to get behind a rumor which conflicts with the information which has already been shared in multiple leaks. Also, the 5.5-inch display would also contradict that phone’s name since it would be the same size as last year’s HTC U11.

However, there’s a small chance that HTC is still working on two different sizes for the HTC U12. Having two phones would allow HTC to jump on the same bandwagon Apple and Samsung have been on for the past two years, allowing customers to choose a flagship smartphone based on its size without having to compromise on specs.

There’s still no concrete news regarding the phone’s exact launch date, but we’re expecting HTC to unveil the device by mid-May.

Would you be willing to pay $850 for an HTC U12+ with all the specs listed above?

  1. Hell yeah, I would! My htc10 went to hell, so I bought an LG v30+ and ended up returning it and filing a warranty claim to replace my htc10 and just wait for the htc 12+. Can’t wait. Htc- better than all the rest.

  2. Well, I’m still waiting for Oreo 8 on my HTC 10. As for the U12+… I can not see spending almost a $1000 dollars for a phone. That is more than I paid for my latest computer!! Yes it is probably worth it but not to me at this time. I’ll wait till the price comes down -or- get a used one later.

  3. I had a U11… It stopped working after a month.HTC repair has had it for almost 3 months now! Serious problems with their customer service. probably not going to buy that new u12…
