The launch of the HTC-built Pixel phones is likely set for the first week of October, but we’re not getting word that Telstra, a service provider in Australia, is planning to start taking pre-order of the 5-inch Google pixel phone on October 4. The phone will then go on sale two and a half weeks later on October 20.
What’s even more interesting is that the source claims that Telstra is working on a full promotional campaign for the Pixel phone, similar to what it typically has planned for an iPhone launch. Google’s Nexus phones haven’t typically received a lot of marketing support from service providers over the years, but that changed a bit last year with the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Service providers were a lot more interested in selling the phones to their customers, but there’s little indication that the extra help allowed Google to sell more Nexus devices.
Things may be a little different this time around. The HTC-built Pixel and Pixel XL will be the first smartphones from Googel under the company’s Pixel brand. This means that Google may be pushing hard to get the phone into as many people’s hands as possible. Naturally, the price points of the two phones will have a lot to do with that, but marketing and sale-through support from service providers is key to a successful launch. Let’s not forget that HTC may join in to make sure that the new Pixel phones as top of mind when consumers walk into a store to buy a new Android smartphone.
