HTC has struggled to deliver a smartphone with a stellar camera experience over the past few years. The HTC One and its UltraPixel sensor showed a lot of promise, but HTC was never able to build on it. This year, things are different. HTC is using a 12MP sensor from Sony, pairing it with optical image stabilization, a wide aperture f/1.8 lens and laser auto focus.
HTC has started distributing review units to members of the press already, but the company sent the HTC 10 over to DxOMark a bit early in order for them to rate the image and video quality of the main camera. DxOMark tests smartphone cameras and video for exposure and contrast, color, texture, noise, artifacts, autofocus, and flash.
The result is a DxOMark score of 88 which is the highest score DxOMark has given a phone in 2016. We’d like to point out that an 88 is the same score that was given to the Samsung Galaxy S7 and 4 points higher than what the Apple iPhone 6S received. To put things into perspective, the HTC One A9 received a score or 78 and the HTC One M9 received an embarrassing 69. We’re curious to know what the results would look like if DxOMark were to test front-facing cameras as well.
I wonder if DxOMark will re-test the phone once the phone/camera is running the final software/firmware.
