HTC breaks its promise, HTC One A9 will not be getting Verizon support

After months of waiting, Verizon customers were delivered some disappointing news: the HTC One A9 will not be getting an update which will add support for Verizon’s network. When the HTC One A9 was originally announced, the phone featured Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile network support. However, HTC promised that the phone would be getting support for Verizon’s LTE network in the future through an OTA update.

Late yesterday, HTC made the announcement that the update has been cancelled after “extensive testing.” HTC did not give a specific reason for why things didn’t work out, but they are offering refunds plus a 20% discount on a purchase of another HTC phone for those who picked up the One A9 with hope that it would eventually work on Verizon.

HTC is committed to providing the best experience for all of our device owners. Following extensive testing, we are unable to support the Verizon network with the Unlocked HTC One A9. For individuals on the Verizon network that ordered the Unlocked HTC One A9 on HTC.com, we will refund his/her order and provide a 20% discount on any current HTC phone or future phones launching through Dec. 31, 2016. Individuals may contact HTC Care at 1-888-216-4736. We regret any inconvenience.

Yes, it’s disappointing that the HTC One A9 will not work on Verizon, but we’re sure that more than a few people will be happy to return the phone and get a 20% discount on the upcoming HTC 10.

Did any of you purchase the HTC One A9 with the expectation that you’d be able to use it on Verizon’s network?

  1. This makes perfect sense. HTC’s sales of the imminent 10 would be cannibalized by the A9. Secondly, Verizon disables many functions of HTC handsets and “infects” the devices with their own mandatory bloatware. Perhaps the A9 was immune to Verizon’s disease.
