In an effort to squash the rumors regarding the spin-off of its virtual reality business, HTC has only raised more questions. HTC issued a statement which denied that the spin-off the VR business into an “independent entity that will be wholly owned by Wang is incorrect.” Many tech outlets are taking this statement as a complete denial of the spin-off rumor, but that’s not the case here. HTC’s statement is very specific, only ruling out that the independent VR business would be owned by Cher Wang. The source we used for our story yesterday claimed that the new company would be owned by Cher Wang and HTC.
Recent media reports in Taiwan, such as by United Evening News, stating that Cher Wang is planning to spin off HTC’s VR operations into an independent entity that will be wholly owned by Wang is incorrect. HTC will continue to develop our VR business to further maximize value for shareholders. – HTC
For now, it looks like the VR business spin-off is still in the works. There’s no saying how soon HTC will be setting up the new subsidiary, but we doubt that the company will have anything concrete to share before pre-sales of the HTC Vive kick off at the end of February.
We’ve reached out to our contacts at HTC for clarification. If we do get any new details on the story, we’ll be sure to share them with you.
