Meet the new HTC Vive headset and controllers

With a new launch date set for April 2016 for the consumer version of the HTC Vive the anticipation is building up inside me. Initially, I thought this month was going to be the month we got to see the final version of Vive and now it seems like I have to hold onto the excitement for a few more months.

Despite not being able to get my hands on the refined version of the Vive headset and controllers yet, we at least get to check out this latest teaser which reveals what the new, second gen developer kit of the Vive will look like.

It’s unclear if HTC will show these at CES in January which is when the company says it will make 7,000 more developers happy by announcing availability of the second generation dev kit. Or HTC could continue to ship the current handheld controllers with the new head-mounted display (HMD).

The current controller many of us have seen by now is long and has a big hexagon-shaped head with tiny sensors on it. The new model shown above, has a very smooth look and the head has been configured into a donut-like appearance with the sensors hidden behind a clear shield.

The headset is surprisingly different. It too has a finessed look to it, with all those sensors covered up behind a clear barrier and a camera protruding from the bottom middle of the goggles. The dev model received high marks for comfort so we hope HTC has preserved that if not improved it on the DK2 version.

Looking at these pictures makes me want to secure a demo in the next closest city the truck rolls into. If HTC is reading, please publish an updated schedule of the tour!

New logo, new HMD, and new controllers. The HTC Vive is beginning to come together and a new level of excitement is building. Next up, price and specs. If you go to CES, it should be your mission to pry this info from anyone wearing a HTC shirt or lanyard!

These pictures were dug up in a thread on the popular site called Reddit.com.
