Rumor: HTC M10 may ditch One branding, could feature Snapdragon 820 SoC

The successor to this year’s HTC One M9 isn’t expected to be unveiled until early 2016, but rumors of HTC’s next flagship smartphone are already making the rounds. New details claim that the HTC One M10 will feature the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC which Qualcomm has been teasing lately. Qualcomm hasn’t revealed full details of the processor yet, but they have disclosed that the Snapdragon 820 will be 35% faster while consuming 30% less power than the current Snapdragon 810 processor. Claiming that HTC’s next flagship will sport the latest and greatest chip from Qualcomm is pretty much a given.

The shocking part of the rumor has to do with the name of the M9’s successor. At this point, we have all been expecting HTC to make its 2016 flagship the HTC One M10, but the source of the rumors claim that the phone will be referred to as the HTC O2. It’s unclear if the HTC O2 name is being used internally as a code name for the phone or if HTC is planning to move away from its One branding of its flagship smartphones. While the HTC One X, One S and One all sold quite well, the One M8 was a bit of a disappointment for HTC and the One M9 has suffered abysmal sales. Moving away from the One brand may be the first step in changing consumer sentiment towards HTC’s flagship phones and help the company inch its way back to a respectable position in the marketplace.

  1. M8 disappointment? Was the best phone for 2014 for many people godness… Ask to mkhd and more
The M9 was a shame because the camera , the fail of Qualcomm 810 , and the lack of improvements of its succesor.

    1. As stated in the article, the M8 was a disappointment for HTC – meaning that it did not sell as well as they expected. As for the M9, the Snapdragon 810 has absolutely nothing to do with how good or bad the phone has done. HTC has successfully mitigated the chip’s overheating through software tweaks from day one, something that Sony and LG have had a hard time with.

      1. I do think the reports on 810 overheating in the m9 hurt its overall sales. Though not a real issue , HTC didn’t respond forcefully and quickly enough and only contributed to people’s impression that it was not the phone to get. As usual, HTC struggles to communicate to its market.

        1. This is why Qualcomm should pay HTC and they dont even bother to make story straight.

Should campain that is not true or is true. No good for any brand.

          1. What Qualcomm needs to do is give them a significant discount on the 820. No point looking backwards at this point.

  2. I was ready for an M9, then I saw the black GS6 128 GB model was the same price. Hoping I can hold out for an m10! Let’s see how long it takes for me to break the glass on the back. Even sammy is fighting to stay relevant against apple. My one-s is becoming our house phone to save our home phone#. One of our family members still uses his M7.

  3. I don’t know if anyone will see this comment but should I wait for the next phone or go ahead and get the M9 or M8?

    1. Tough call. The M10 is at least 6 months out. The M9 is great, but if I were you I’d get the M8 for cheap now and M10 when it comes out.
