On the eve to the HTC Re’s launch in Taiwan, HTC’s North Asia president Jack Tong has revealed that the company has plans to release a second HTC RE device in 2015 as the company plans to build a standalone product category for the handheld camera. HTC is expecting 5 percent of Taiwan’s 8 million smartphone users to “want” the first-gen HTC RE. If HTC is estimating sales of 400,000 units in Taiwan alone, it’s clear that the company has high hopes that the new camera category will have a significant impact on the company’s bottom line.
It’ll be interesting to see if the HTC RE is a success and how the new product category will change HTC’s trajectory. If things go well, HTC could be a completely new company in 2-5 years with a handful of new product categories to help sustain the business.
