Official: HTC Desire Eye announced with 13 megapixel selfie camera, Snapdragon 801 SoC

Move over HTC One (M8), there’s a new smartphone to pay attention to! The HTC Desire Eye has just been unveiled, delivering on the “ultimate selfie” rumors which have been circulating over the past few months. The smartphone’s main selling point is a 13 megapixel camera on the front that’s paired with a two-tone LED flash, but that doesn’t mean HTC’s skimped out on the phone’s other features.

Powering the HTC Desire Eye is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC with 2GB of RAM. Other specs include a 5.2-inch 1080p display, 16GB internal storage with microSD slot expandable to 128GB, 2,400 mAh battery, 3 microphones for noise cancellation and the usual WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and senor setup found in other HTC smartphones, topped off with a water resistant rating of IPX7 (immersion for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter of water). The camera setup on the HTC Desire Eye is truly unique with two identical 3 megapixel BSI sensor sensors paired with two-tone LED flashes on the front and back of the phone. The only difference between the two is the 22mm lens on the front camera and 28mm lens on the back.

The body of the HTC Desire Eye is comprised of a two-colored, soft-touch polycarbonate finish with white on the front and back and a red trim along the phone’s four edges. The Desire Eye does have BoomSound speakers which the engineering team craftily hid inside small slits between the glass and polycarbonate frame on the phone’s front side. Since HTC hopes you’ll be taking quite a few pictures with the HTC Desire Eye, the phone features a dedicated camera button.

AT&T has been selected as the “official launch partner” for the HTC Desire Eye, but the exact launch date has not been announced yet. The HTC Desire Eye will be making its way to other US service providers as soon as AT&T’s exclusive launch window expires (typically 8-10 weeks). The price of the HTC Desire Eye is set at —– with a two-year contract.

  1. The way how they “hide” boomspeakers in ingenius but will wait for reviews. Do they sound the same or better than M8 not sure but still should sound better than any phone on market and also shows they can do this way in future.

  2. The strength of the Desire Eye isn’t in its 13MP cameras but its unibody design and flagship-baiting specifications. The excellent screen and front-facing speakers mean this handset punches above its weight.
