Rumor: HTC M8 EYE loses NFC, only heading to China and India

If the recent HTC M8 EYE rumors had you hoping that HTC was finally going to ditch its UltraPixel camera sensor, you’ll be disappointed to hear that the new phone will only be available in China and India. According to @upleaks, the HTC M8 EYE will be named the HTC One (M8 EYE) when it goes on sale, making it one of the oddest names HTC devices we’ve seen in a long time.

Based on all the rumors we’ve heard so far, the HTC One (M8 EYE) is a cross between the HTC Butterfly 2 which has a 13 megapixel DuoCamera setup and the HTC One (M8). The One (M8 EYE) will take the aluminum body of the One (M8) and merge is with the 13 megapixel DuoCamera from the Butterfly 2. Other internal specs should be similar to those of the HTC One (M8), but @upleaks claims that the phone will not have an NFC chip.

We’ll forgive you if you’re a bit confused. We are too. It’s obvious that HTC is looking for a winning strategy here, but having too many variations of the HTC One (M8) can be detrimental to the unified brand HTC was hoping to create.

If you could build your ideal smartphone by mix and matching the different components and build materials HTC has used this year, what would your phone look like?

  1. HTC does not release all these variants in one country. So your comment about their strategy is a little off.

    1. Actually, that’s not true. The HTC One (M8), One (E8) and Butterfly 2 are all devices which are for sale in India. Add the One (M8 EYE) and you four variants of the same phone. The Chinese market already has the One (M8) and the One (E8) and will most likely get the Butterfly 2 in a month or two.

      1. Fair enough. But it is clear from your comments this is not a global strategy. Also there might be a reason for it being effective in those other countries. You made a conclusion that what they are doing is a bad idea – and I tend to agree – but there is no evidence to support the claim either way.
