HTC’s Cher Wang reveals HTC M8 launch event invites coming in two weeks

In an interview with Reuters, HTC chairman Cher Wang laid out HTC’s strategy for 2014 and how the company plans to regain its momentum.  According to Wang, “the problem with us last year was we only concentrated on our flagship. We missed a huge chunk of the mid-tier market.” In 2014, HTC will improve the quality and number of devices it offers in the $150 to $300, targeted specifically at emerging and developing markets alongside $600+ high-end smartphones. HTC is looking to pick up a significant portion of the mid to low end of the smartphone market, but Cher Wang says HTC will not be playing in the “very, very low-end market” and compete with no-name Chinese manufacturers.  “Overall profitability is going to grow” in 2014 with high sales volumes cheaper phones, but HTC’s flagship lineup will still be getting a lot of attention with a revitalized marketing effort.

Wang admitted that HTC “didn’t do well” in 2014 and failed adequately market the HTC One. The upcoming launch of the HTC M8 will be accompanied by a “very aggressive campaign” which will pull in general consumers and not just tech-savvy 20 to 30-year-olds. Cher Wang did not say when the HTC M8 will be released, but she did reveal that invitations to the phone’s launch event will be sent out in about two weeks.
