Will your HTC handset be updated to Android 4.4? Here’s what we think

Android 4.4 has been around for only a few months, but HTC is already off to a good start, releasing Android 4.4 builds for the HTC one Google Play Edition and the unlocked/developer HTC One here in the US.  HTC has also posted its own Android 4.4 update page which highlights the update process and lists the update status for a select number of devices. Unfortunately, HTC has not released a comprehensive list phones which will be updated to Android 4.4, so we thought we’d get our hands dirty and put together our own list.

Any device capable of running android 4.2 or 4.3 should also be able to handle Android 4.4 quite easily. In fact, Google’s goal with Android 4.4 was to create on operating system that’s capable of running smoothly on devices with as little as 512MB of RAM. Based on these facts, all HTC devices running Android 4.2 or 4.3 should be updated to Android 4.4. Unfortunately, things aren’t always that simple.  Even 2012’s flagship HTC One X will not be updated beyond Android 4.2.2.

HTC phones that should get the Android 4.4 update

If you’ve purchased a new high-end HTC phone within the past twelve months, chances are that your phone will be updated to Android 4.4.  The first phone to receive the Android 4.4 update was the HTC One Google Play Edition, followed by the HTC One Developer Edition and HTC One Unlocked. Next on the list are U.S. carrier branded versions of the HTC One which are expected to receive the update by the end of January with the update unlocked and carrier specific versions of the phone trickling out around the same time.

The only other devices to officially make HTC’s Android 4.4 update list are the HTC Droid DNA and the HTC Desire 601. The HTC Droid DNA and HTC Desire 601 are both sitting in the Integration stage currently, but HTC has announced that Droid DNA owners will receive the KitKat update before the end of Q1 2014.

HTC phones that won’t get the Android 4.4 update

Last time around, we assumed that all HTC phones running on Qualcomm S4 processors would not get updates to Android 4.2. This time, we are not comfortable making such a broad statement based on hardware alone. When it comes to the Android 4.4 update, a handset’s life cycle appears to be the deciding factor which dictates which devices will get a taste of KitKat. Besides the HTC Butterfly and a few of its variants, we have a feeling that HTC will only be updating devices released in 2013 to Android 4.4 and above.

This was made clear just recently when HTC announced that the flagship HTC One X and HTC One X+ will not be updated beyond Android 4.2.2. Our contact at HTC has told us that those devices will be stranded on an older version of Android due to “lifecycle timing, not technical limitation.” This point is highlighted by the fact that the HTC EVO 4G LTE will soon be updated to Android 4.3 simply because Sprint chose to skip the Android 4.2 update.

Check out list below to see if your phone will make the cut and be updated to Android 4.4. Again, we’d like to remind you that this information is based on our knowledge of HTC phones and how HTC has updated their handsets in the past.  HTC has already begun its the roll-out of  Android 4.4 to the HTC One, but most devices will not get a taste of the latest KitKat build until  Q2 of 2014. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date on any new details that come our way. What are your predictions? Will your HTC phone be getting Android 4.4?
