The injunction against the HTC One which the Amsterdam district court granted Nokia for the use of high-amplitude microphone chip has forced HTC to look for a new supplier to ensure that European customers can continue to purchase the flagship device. Since HTC was not found to be at fault in the dispute between ST Microelectronics and Nokia, HTC will be able to use its remaining supply of the chip.
While Nokia’s statement that “HTC has no license or authorization from Nokia to use these microphones or the Nokia technologies from which they have been developed,” HTC is trying to sidestep the issue “because they were purchased in good-faith.”
“Nokia’s attempt to obtain a recall of microphones already sold to HTC failed.” – HTC
HTC “will transition to improved microphone designs once its inventory of STM microphones is exhausted.” We do not know how many STM microphones HTC has on hand, who will supply the “improved microphone designs” or if there will be a difference in quality between current HTC One’s and devices which will roll off the production line later this summer.
Hopefully HTC is able to manage the component transition without a hitch and keep the HTC One rolling off the production line.
