HTC One’s twin-membrane microphones to deliver distortion free recording

When the HTC One was unveiled a few weeks ago, HTC briefly mentioned that the device featured dual-membrane microphones to reduce audio distortion while recording video in loud environments. In an effort to give us a little more detail on the technology, HTC has posted a new blog post with some additional insights.

High-end components are always easy to spot in today’s flagship devices, but manufacturers always seem to skip high-quality components when it comes to speakers, microphones and other things which consumers are simply not educated about. Fortunately, HTC is dedicated to deliver the best user experience possible with the HTC One and has gone above and beyond to make sure that the audio quality delivered and captured by its new flagship device is of the highest quality.

HTC BoomSound may be another ridiculous marketing, but it’s a whole lot more than front-facing stereo speakers with a dedicated amplifier. BoomSound also refers to the two dual-membrane MEMS microphones used in the HTC One which allow the phone to record distortion free audio in nearly any situation. Most smartphones use a single microphone to record audio. This approach works just fine in many cases, but distortion set in if you’re in a loud environment and that annoying hissing sound always seems to muddle up a recording which should whisper quiet. The reason for this can be traced back to the  “single-membrane” microphone in smartphones that determines the overall recording limits; which can focus on:

  • High sensitivity, which impacts sound quality at very low volumes (as measured by Sound to Noise Ratio (SNR)).
  • Increased capability to capture high audio levels, which impacts recordings at high volume (as measured by Sound Pressure Level (SPL)).

To solve the issue, the HTC One features two dual-membrane MEMS microphones which focus on high-sensitivity and high sound pressure. The audio signal from the two microphones is combined, improving overall audio quality and reducing background noise. HTC BoomSound may still be a marketing term which most people will only associate with the HTC One’s front-facing speakers, but we’re glad that HTC is also thinking of the little details like dual-membrane MEMS microphones which will make our videos and Zoes sound that much better.
