Rumors that Facebook has been working with HTC to develop its own phone have been floating around for several month now. While HTC has unsuccessfully tried (and failed) to develop a Facebook themed phone on its own, a device manufactured with Facebook’s backing should gain a lot more support in the market place.
According to a new benchmark listing in NenaMark2, the Facebook phone is currently known as the HTC Opera UL and features a 1.4GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, Adreno 305 GPU, a 1280 x 720 display (size unknown) and is running on Android 4.1.1. It’s clear that HTC and Facebook have no intention of delivering a cheap, low-end handset like the HTC Status or HTC Salsa.
While Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg’s claim that a “phone just doesn’t make any sense,” we could see how a true Facebook phone could have a certain appeal to a younger crowd. There’s a subset of the population which lives its entire life on Facebook. The company has its own email client, messaging system, video and pictures service and integrated applications. If they can manage a seamless integration into Android, the HTC Opera UL could be an extremely appealing device.
