With Q3 of 2012 neatly wrapped up, HTC has released its quarterly earnings report which shows a $133 million (NT$3.9 billion) net income after taxes on $2.397 billion (NT$70.2 billion) in revenue. While HTC may still be in the black, those numbers are significantly lower than the $3 billion (NT$91.04 billion) in revenue and $247 million (NT$7.40 billion) net income HTC posted in Q2 of this year and a 48 percent drop in revenue from the its record setting numbers it posted in Q3 of 2011.
HTC’s revenue and profit numbers have been hammered by increased competition in the smartphone sector by Samsung, Apple and even Sony which has seen a huge uptick in the European market this past year.
Fortunately, the fourth quarter may be HTC’s turning point for 2012. It will be nearly impossible for HTC to match its revenues from 2011, but the company’s fall lineup should allow revenue to finish on a high note for the year. With new Windows Phone 8X and 8S set to launch across Europe and three major carriers in the U.S. market and updated HTC One X+, One VX and rumored DROID Incredible X, HTC should be a strong competitor for consumer mindshare as we head into the holiday season.

Unless HTC changes something drastically in their marketing department and phone distribution, things are not looking good. The One X is good but signing an exlusive deal with AT&T is only a temporary sigh of relief in terms of revenue, while hurting the rest of the market. The One X+ and One XV should be in a similar circumstance if they don’t promote it more. Verizon is getting their Droid Incredible X, Sprint has their Evo, while T-Mobile is stuck on the One S, which has probably contributed to the recent news of the Galaxy S3 being Tmo’s all-time best seller due to specs and marketability. Also, the HTC Nexus rumors have not been very stable as of late. No benchmarks, pics, or anything that would indicate otherwise. It would be really sad to just see an LG and Samsung Nexus this year.
