According to the latest numbers from Gartner, HTC is now ranked as the 8th largest global phone manufacturer having sold 9.3 million mobile phones for a 2.2 percent market share. The good news is that HTC showed an increase in sales during Q2, up from 7.7 million units (1.8 percent market share). Unfortunately, the launch of the new HTC One series was not enough to regain the 2.6 percent market share they hold during Q2 of 2011.
While being in 8th place isn’t anything to brag about, Garnet places HTC above Motorola and RIM. Depending on how many of Nokia’s Symbian handsets are considered to be “smart” device, HTC could conceivably be considered the third largest global smartphone maker. The issue is that there’s a huge gap separating HTC and Apple – a gap which will most likely widen once the iPhone 5 is released this fall.
At the end of the day, the numbers put out by Gartner don’t really mean much. Analysts use these numbers to help with their projections as to how HTC may performs from quarter to quarter, but the numbers are mostly speculative since the majority of OEMs no longer release monthly of quarterly units sales figures.
