The development community has been churning out custom ROMs for the Tegra 3 powered HTC One X for a while and now functioning versions CyanogenMod 9 and MIUI 4 have been released. Both ROMs give users a completely different experience than what HTC originally intended for the HTC One X, but that’s the beauty of Android.
HTC One X owners who opt to install the first release of CyanogenMod 9 will be treated to a fairly stock Android 4.0 build with the usual CyanodenMod customizations. The developers have modified the capacitive buttons on the HTC One X, allowing the multitasking button to act as the menu button which eliminated the black menu bar which appears at the button of the screen on the one X while using applications which are not optimized for Android 4.0. Unfortunately, the CM9 build for the HTC One X is not fully functional as it is missing camera and WiFi hotspot capabilities.
The MIUI 4 Beta for the HTC One X is a fully functional ROM which retains the HTC camera, gallery and music (including Beats Audio) applications, delivering the same media functionality HTC intended for the device. There are a few reports of bugs and a sluggish hope screen, but these minor performance issues should be addressed in the next release.
We’re not sure when the first release candidates for CM9 and MIUI 4 will be made available for the HTC One X, but we hope the development teams are able to sort through the remaining issues as quickly as possible. Both ROMs appear to be stable enough to be used as daily drivers as long as you don’t mind a living without a camera or running into random force-close notifications.
Will you be installing a custom ROM on your HTC One X or will keep the phone docked down and stick with HTC’s official updates?
