Petition HTC to make a new Android phone with a QWERTY keyboard

Those of you who follow Android and the development community know that there are a lot of people who like to start petitions for many different reasons. Sometimes it’s a petition for Qualcomm or other chip manufactures to release drivers. Sometimes it’s to petition HTC to unlock bootloadres. And then there are just the random petitions which no one seems to care about.

Today is actually the first time we’re writing about a petition since it directly involves HTC and has the potential to influence the creation and design of a new HTC phone. Many of us have used HTC’s QWERTY handsets over the years.  HTC first introduced the design with Windows Mobile, but the hugely popular T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream) was a device that many consumers fell in love with because of its amazing keyboard. HTC has created several new QWERT Android phones since the G1 came to market nearly three and a half years ago, but the HTC Desire Z was the last QWERTY phone HTC sold with its brand plastered on the back. T-Mobile released the myTouch 4G Slide which was manufactured by HTC, but it was only released in the U.S. market.

In an effort to convince HTC that there are customers willing to buy a QWERTY Android powered device, a petition has been started on change.org. Right now, there have been less than 50 signatures collected, but we hope you can lend a hand and show your support for the cause. We know most of you prefer HTC’s candy bar designs, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a QWERTY option available for those who can’t get enough of HTC’s physical keyboards.  The goal is to get 10,000 signatures. We’re not sure if we can get that many, but we’ll definitely try.

  1. Not only do they need to make a new QWERTY device but they should make a five row QWERTY device. The keyboard on the g1 was perfect!!!

  2. I’m a huge for of the 5 row QWERTY on the Touch Pro 2 with tilting screen. HTC was the leader in QWERTY devices a few years back and it seems they simply forgot about them.

  3. when I was looking for a smartphone to get (as my very first) a few months ago I decided I want 1)Android OS 2) HTC Sense 3) Qwerty Keyboard. I bought HTC Desire Z because it was their latest phone which had all three, am very happy with it but eventually as technology gets more advanced I’ll end up replacing the phone but hoping there will be a stronger device with a keyboard

  4. I’m all for it. It is time for the Desire Z to have a decent QWERTY successor. The Desire Z is a great phone with wonderful build quality, but the 2010 device is aging. HTC doesn’t currently have anything to compete with Motorola’s Droid 4 and similar phones, so I think a QWERTY device is necessary to their lineup. Would this be an addition to the One series and also maybe a T-Mobile G3?

  5. I am in love with phones that comes with qwerty kboards. Ever since the Dream came out.. My eyes nver ever stayed away from searching phones with qwerty. I have since then the Nokia Nseries, Xpressmusic 7310, HTC Desire z, n even the ChaCha. Myb HTC shud make One n myb name it HTC One Q. It’ll be cool.

  6. I was in a Sprint store and picked up the HTC Arrive just for kicks. I was amazed at the keyboard. Fell in love almost instantly. The keys are perfect. The only issue it’s a Win7 phone. I was looking for a Droid. I have a BB Bold 9900 and and iPhone 4 from work and don’t like either of them. Now I’m looking for the Droid version of the HTC Arrive to replace my personal cell. The keys are proportionally in the right place and you can feel when you press them esp the Space bar. Since then I’ve tried T-mobile 4Gslide, MyTouch Q, didn’t like either of them. Just tried Droid3, not bad but a rather large phone. Prefer the Arrive to all others. HTC please make a 4G Android dual core phone with the HTC ARRIVE keyboard, please please!!!

  7. You gotta have a QWERTY man!! That’s the reason I will NEVER give up my G1 regardless of whatever new stuff’s out there on the market.
