HTC and Beats Audio working on a new streaming music service to compete with Spotify

The folks at HTC sure do have their plates full lately.  We’ve recently reported the news about the Endeavor and the possible Playstation Certified devices to be announced at Mobile World Congress.  Now, there are rumors that HTC is working on their own streaming music service.  The Taiwanese company intends to use the Beats Audio, which it has put tons of capital into, as the basis for a standalone streaming music service to be included on upcoming phones and tablets.

Jimmy Iovine, Beats Audio CEO and Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, may use his influence in the music industry to help convince records labels to sign up for the service.  Many of the record label executives have expressed their apprehension to the creation on an iTunes competitor such as Spotify and this could give them the opportunity to band together to help prevent that from happening.  The service could launch right around the corner at the upcoming Mobile World Congress.

Do you think the additional focus on audio will help HTC regain some of the momentum lost in the past months?

  1. slightly concerned about over-diversification, though as these are “can do everything” devices, perhaps it’s possible to market them as such – look at iPhone.

If all these rumours are true, seems a very make-or-break move by HTC to grab the top end of premium android market. Very interested…

  2. I wasn’t able to access all music using spotify because of my location. But I signed up for arcvpn and can switch between regions to access all the music.
