HTC gives Android 4.0 two thumbs up, already sorting out handset update plans

We’re not sure how any of you stayed up late last night ot get a peak at Samsung’s new Galaxy Nexus phone, but if you did you also got to see everything that Google has in store for Android with their Ice Cream Sandwich update. The newest version of Android features a complete UI overhaul and a consistent UX throughout all the core applications within Android.

So what does this mean for HTC phone owners and when will we be seeing some of these new features on our phones? HTC doesn’t have a full answer quite yet, but they have announced that they are looking into handset upgrade plans. HTC want to make sure they are “balancing each phone’s unique hardware, HTC Sense experience and the Android kernel” to deliver the best possible experience for each phone.
We are excited about the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, and are currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans. Our goal for Android updates is to give every customer an improved user experience, which means balancing each phone’s unique hardware, HTC Sense experience and the Android kernel. While our goal is to upgrade as many of our recent devices as possible, we are committed to maintaining every phone’s performance and usability first. Please stay tuned for more updates on specific device upgrade plans.
Our guess is that most HTC phones form this year will be getting updated to Android 4.0, but don’t expect the update to show up any time soon.  We don’t know how long HTC has had access to the ICS source code and we expect them to revamp HTC Sense a bit to incorporate most of the new feature and tweaks within the latest Android update.

We’re putting our money on mid January for phones like the HTC Sensation, Amaze 4G and the EVO 3D to get their upgrade to Android 4.0.  How long do you think it’ll take HTC to roll out the first ICS update?

1. It’s a great news to know that finally HTC will work on some new firmware for their more expensive devices. I was going to loose every hope. It’s from July that nobody sees updates, since the good 2.3.3.
Much less important producers are “donating” 2.3.5, Samsung will complete it in November and Google is 2.3.7.
I don’t know what to think about but i’m quite sure my new Incredible S won’t jump to Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s just my idea.
If anybody would desire to correct my words or give me news about this argument, i will thank him since this precise moment.
I see a future or Roms to expand my device from Gingerbread 2.3.3 and for real i have other 2 years of warranty. What a shame would it be.
Thanks

2. Google has said that the Nexus S will be getting ICS pretty soon and that even the Nexus One could get the update in a few months. The Incredible S has only been on the market for a few months and its specs are comparable to the Nexus S. There’s no reason why Any HTC phone with a 1GHz process that’s been released in the past 12 months shouldn’t get Android 4.0.

That being said, it’s up to HTC to determine how much effort they want to put into the update and if the user base for each device is significant enough to warrant development resources on their end. We’ll have to see how this all plays out, but we’ll be sure to bring you guys any updates that we come across.

3. Worse comes to worse, with HTCdev rolling out bootloader-access for their phones, we can always root and install ICS ourselves. Sad to lose Sense, though.

4. Thanks for the replay. i appreciated.
Let’s hope or believing in HTC devices will be paid soon with a big update.

For real i think that the bootloader access for devices like mine is not going to arrive soon, but i will wait.
Question: after making a bootloading offered by HTC, will the warranty last until the end of the 2 years?, or it will die like for common root and installing of roms?
Thanks a lot,
G.

5. We still don’t know any specifics about which phones will get updated to Android 4.0 or when it will happen. HTC typically announced their update strategy one at a time, so as soon as we hear something we’ll let you know.

6. Well, I hope that they will announce their strategy soon! I am hoping to buy a Desire S or a Desire HD, but I can’t go for either of them because I pretty much doubt whether they will get the ICS update! Anyway, thanks Nick! 🙂

7. Btw, I would really appreciate if you can suggest me the most astute choice from Desire S and Deisre HD in terms of the ICS update.
Thanks in advance! 🙂

8. hi will htc disire z 2.3.3 get the update to because i have herd that it will help battery drane and wifi problems , and i have seen on youtube htc disire z running on icecream sandwich . thanks

9. I hope the HTC Evo Shift 4G gets the update!
This is probably the best sliding keyboard phone on the market out there!
It’d be a bit of a downer to know that this phone won’t get the 4.0.
The Gingerbread update, sad to say, slowed my phone down ever since I got it.
The Froyo system was a great OS, let’s pray Ice Cream Sandwich knocks it out of the ball park.
