Remember that security hole which was identified in the HTCLogger app a few weeks back? It looks like some HTC customers no longer have to worry about malicious apps accessing their personal data as HTC and Sprint have started pushing out an OTA security patch which fixes the vulnerability. The update is being rolled out for the HTC EVO 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Shift 4G, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC EVO View 4G and Virgin Mobile branded HTC Wildfire S.
Sprint is pushing out the security update in waves so that their servers don’t get overwhelmed, but they do allow customers to manually trigger the download process by selecting Settings > System updates > HTC software update > Check Now.
It’s only been three weeks since HTC acknowledged the security hole in their application, so we applaud them for getting things turned around so quickly. We hope HTC is working with other service providers to release the patch for all their other phones within the next few days.
Sprint worked closely with HTC after reports emerged of a potential issue that could allow malicious third-party apps to compromise data on Android™ devices made by HTC. Protecting customer privacy is a top priority at Sprint. Beginning today, HTC EVO™ 4G, HTC EVO™ 3D, HTC EVO Shift™ 4G, HTC EVO Design 4G™, HTC EVO View 4G™ and HTC Wildfire S™ customers will receive the over-the-air software update to address this situation. We urge all users to install the update promptly.
Have you downloaded the update for your HTC phone yet? While we still have quite a ways to go before all of HTC’s effected devices are patched, how would you rate HTC’s response to this whole situation?
