Most of you would remember some of the hype around Mango being available early for registered developers, it was a bit exciting to think that I might get early access to the next major update for Windows Phone. Whilst it’s not true that they won’t, that news has changed a bit, or been restructured at least. When I say restructured, what I actually mean is that there will be no update for current developer phones pushed out over the air to the original developer devices released to a select few in early 2010,the Samsung Taylor, LG Panther and Asus E600. Or to any of the ten current Windows Phones on the market that have been dev unlocked. So from the App Hub today, a little update.
To update Joe’s tweet: We’re working on a plan. Just like last year, when we made developer phones available with the Windows Phone 7 OS, we plan to have developer phones this summer supporting new Mango features like the gyroscope. We don’t have any dates to share just yet, so stay tuned.
So it looks like we, should I some selected developers, and needless to say reviewers, will be handed a new developer handset running the full pre release version of Mango, and no word on how many or availability to the rest of us for these handsets. The original three were limited, and very hard to get outside the US. Speculation on what the handset might be, leads us to the phone that we have seen mango previewed on the most, the HTC Mazaa, the Trophy/Mozart like HTC phone said to have a 12 megapixel camera.
As in most cases with Microsoft, expect the phones to be handed out first in the US, and possibly, at some point made available for outright purchase. Considering that there’s over 32000 registered developers, and the US centric approach Microsoft continues to take with Windows Phone, I wonder if we’ll see any of these down under!
