Yesterday I posted about an upcoming application from @chriswalshie, that appeared on his site for, I don’t even think it made 24 hours. The download link on the site went down sometime today, and although lot’s of people were reporting success with the procedure, there seemed to be a fair share of problems with Samsung devices.
Considering the relationship between the ChevronWP7 team have with Microsoft, it may be that Chris has had to pull the app, because he got ahead of Microsoft in the development process. The fact is, Walshie provided a solution to the Windows Phone update debacle, that has been restricted “for testing” by carriers in many countries. It may also be that Chris has one upped Microsoft, providing a solution that does what the fruit company does, directly updates the firmware circumventing carrier restrictions. I emailed Chris, but I don’t think I’ll get a reply on this, but I videoed the second half of the update to NoDo, after the pre update worked without a glitch on my Telstra HTC Mozart.
The first part of the update was so quick, if you blinked you would miss it, My phone went, from the 7004 build to 7008 as quick as, you would expect a minor update to go. The second update to get up to 7390, took a lot more time, about twelve minutes. slightly more nerve racking, but again, no problem that I can see at the moment. My phone is not developer unlocked, and is carrier branded. I didn’t have a great video solution to document the procedure, but the out of focus version is below.
At the moment what I am seeing, well copy and paste, but speed is what is the most significant. Scrolling and response time is elevated, app resume time is a lot better, and signal strength is really improved as well. All in all this belated update, was worth the wait, no matter how I got it. Now it’s not still available at the original source, but you might find it here. [The x64 version any way.] The politics here are incredible, if Microsoft want to become a major force in the mobile marketplace, they need to take control of their updating process, a great OS is driven by consumer approval, not carrier approval. Also with Microsoft’s focus on developers, stifling a great developer, should not be an option, bring him onto the team. Within a day of the release of the Windows Phone support tool, it was pulled apart and turned into a useful utility. Let’s hope Microsoft can see the popularity, and the expedited updating process that Chris created and learn from it.
