When we first got our review unit for the HTC Inspire 4G we noted that the device didn’t feel like it was truly running 4G speeds. Many of you noted that AT&T wouldn’t officially launch their 4G network until March 1st and so we decided to wait. It’s now well past AT&T’s official 4G launch and HTC Inspire 4G owners are eager to point out that their 4G devices are still getting 3G speeds. It turns out that the problem isn’t AT&T’s HSPA+ network, but rather a throttle put in place on the HTC Inspire 4G which limits the handsets HSUPA upload connection.
AT&T has finally come forward with the following statement: “As you noticed, we have a number of HSUPA devices today and we will have more HSUPA-enabled devices in the future—new devices and updates to existing models.”
It’s unclear is AT&T has plans on rolling out a firmware update which would fix the HTC Inspire 4G’s network speeds. We’re hoping that AT&T can simply remove the HSUPA throttle on the Inspire to that the handset’s speeds can at least live up to the handset’s name. If AT&T doesn’t act quick, I could see a huge backlash with a lot of Inspire 4G owners returning their handsets since they were promised something that AT&T has not delivered on.
