HTC working on a VoLTE handset for MetroPCS

HTC is expected to have 4G phones deployed on all four major service providers in the U.S. within the next few weeks.  To most, 4G simply means faster data speeds, but MetroPCS and HTC are apparently working on a VoLTE device which would take advantage of MetroPCS’ LTE network to deliver higher quality voice calls. VoLTE is certainly not a new idea, but it’s the first time that HTC is being included in the conversation.  There have been rumblings about Verizon playing around with the VoLTE idea, but since MetroPCS uses the same AWS bandwidth for their LTE and CDMA network we’ve guessing they want to convert as many customers over to LTE as they can in order to eventually kill of CDMA entirely.

Details about the HTC’s VoLTE enabled device are still unknown at this point; but if we had to guess, we’d say that HTC will be delivering a high-end Android powered device.  Certainly an HTC Thunderbolt variant would be nice, though we’d much prefer a new LTE handset powered by one of Qualcomm’s third generation dual-core Snapdragon processors.
