Quick hands-on overview of the T-Mobile myTouch 4G

HTC T-Mobile myTouch 4G in store

It’s always fun to head down to one of our local carrier stores whenever a new HTC handset is launched.  Today was no exception as the launch of the myTouch 4G looks to be T-Mobile’s front runner for this Holiday Season.

The store

As usual, my local T-Mobile store did some slight rearrangement in order to prominently show off the new myTouch 4G.  It was prominently on display at the front of the store for everyone to see as they walked in.  However, we were a bit disappointed to see only one demo unit of the handset available since a side counter featured three myTouch Slides and two of the original myTouch demo units.

The display

If your local T-Mobile store has been remodeled lately, you’re probably familiar with the new interactive demo computer s that they have been using.  T-Mobile has one set up specifically for the myTouch 4G which allows you to browse through some of the new features that the phone offers and get a feel for what it can do.  Around the phone were a few display cards with information about the Genius Button and Wi-Fi calling/tethering.

The phone

The myTouch 4G feels a lot different than it looks.  While the exterior design is reminiscent of the other myTouch phones from T-Mobile, the build quality is definitely on par with what HTC has been pushing out the door lately.  The handset felt extremely solid and is a little heavier than you would expect.

The software is definitely an improvement over the myTouch Slide, but that it mainly due to the newer Android 2.2 build that it is running on.  We didn’t get a chance to test out the video calling functionality of the phone, but we were definitely impressed with the images and video quality that the camera produced.  Images and video were extremely clear and seemed to reproduce just the right colors (unlike the G2).

Overall, we were extremely satisfied with the time we spent with the new T-Mobile myTouch 4G.  Anyone planning on picking one up should definitely be happy with the performance and build quality.  We still think it looks a bit cartoonish, but beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.  If any of you have gotten the chance to play with the myTouch 4G, let us know what you think in the comments.
