T-Mobile myTouch 3G Android 2.2 OTA update expected to begin rollout tomorrow

T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G customers are about to get their first real update in over a year! Our very good friends over at TmoNews are reporting that T-Mobile and HTC will begin rolling out an Android 2.2 OTA update to the myTouch 3G starting tomorrow.  The Android 2.2 update will bring quite a few new enhancements such as a newer version of the Android Market, Live Wallpapers, T-Mobile’s Faves gallery, enhanced Exchange support integrated into the mail, calendar, and contacts applications.

The OTA update is expected to roll out between October 13th and the 25th.  But before you get all excited, it looks like only the original myTouch 3G will be getting this initial update.  If you own the myTouch 3G 3.5 or the Fender Edition you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer.  T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G owners have been waiting quite patiently, so we’re extremely happy to know that T-Mobile is making good on their promise: “No phone left behind. That’s our pledge.”

New featires and enhancements with Android 2.2

New Fully Integrated Exchange Client

  • Improved security: Numeric pin and alpha-numeric password options have been added to unlock the device. Exchange administrators can enforce password policy across devices.
  • Remote wipe: In the event a device is lost or stolen, Exchange administrators can remotely reset the device
to factory defaults to secure data.
  • Exchange calendars: Exchange calendars are now supported in the Calendar application.
  • Auto-discovery: With just a user name and password users can easily set up and/or sync an Exchange
account (available for Exchange 2007 and higher).
  • Global Address Lists look-up: This functionality is now available in the E-mail application, enabling users
to auto-complete recipient names from an entire directory.

  • Faves Gallery gives customers quick access to the 20 people who matter most.
  • Customers can scroll through their Faves Gallery and instantly see the most recent communication from
their top 20 Faves – calls, texts, emails, instant messaging, and social networking updates – and respond in a flash.

New Home Screen Features

  • Home screen Tips widget provides tips on how to configure the home screen with shortcuts and widgets
and how to make use of multiple home screens.
  • Market widget lets you keep on top what’s hot on Android Market, showing featured apps right on the
    home screen.
  • Live wallpapers are available on Android Market, such as Aquarium, Google Maps and many others.
  • Phone, All Apps and Browser now have dedicated shortcuts on the home screen, making it easy to access
them from any of the five home screen panels.

Improved Communication Features

  • Gmail app enhancements:
  • Include quoted text from the body of an e-mail message Navigate quickly using on-screen
previous/next buttons Identify e-mails using colored labels See inline images in messages

  1. What is the Deal?

Can someone, with actually knowledge, tell me who is responsible for the Android 2.2 OTA update for T-mobile MyTouch3Gs. I don’t get it. T-mobile customer service, which is a misnomer as much as the Mission Statement “Customer Delight” is just a slogan, told me Google is the one responsible for holding up the release. How can this be??? The Google phone got there 2.2 update shortly after the release, proving it can be done is a reasonable time. I give up. T-mobile is useless. The standard answer is straight out of 2nd grade “I don’t know” that can’t even give you the name of the person in charge of the rollout to direct a letter. Please add some clarity if you can.

    Not Customer Delighted

    1. Dave,

The short answer is that T-Mobile is ultimately responsible for the OTA update. The files are being hostedon Google’s servers, but that does not make them responsible for the delay. The update is rolling out a slower than expected, but should be complete before the end of November.

If you don’t want to wait that long, you can always try installing the update manually. IntoMobile has put together some instructions on how to download and install the update yourself. I have done thing for two other people and can say it’s pretty painless. Just be sure to follow the instruction to the T.
