Many people have heard about the Nexus One. Google touted the handset as the first ever Superphone, but since it is currently only available online through their website, many potential customers who enjoy getting their hands on a device before making a purchase, have been left in the dark. Fortunately for customers here in the U.S. and the rest of the world, Google has just announced a change in their deployment strategy for the Nexus One. Google’s recent launch of the Nexus One with Vodafone in the UK will be the model that they plan on switching to (your typical, run of the mill handset release model that every manufacturer on the plan seems to follow). As Google launched the Nexus One around the globe, they will continue to partner with carriers so that the handset is features prominently in their retail store and websites. In the announcement, Google stated that Android adoption has exceeded their expectations, though their Google.com/phone store has not. Once the new distribution strategy has rolled out, Google will transform their phone store into a showcase to feature Android powered handsets on various carriers across the globe.
Google’s shift in strategy can only be considered a good thing since it will make the Nexus One (and any future Nexus handsets) more accessible to customer. Potential buyers will also be able to purchase the phone with whatever qualifying plan that carriers have to offer with it without having to jump through hoops just to get a subsidized discount. There’s no indication of when Google will complete the transition to their new strategy, but don’t be surprised if you spot the Nexus One on T-Mobile’s website or in stores before the end of the summer.
