Many of you might remember a company named iMate. They made their living by rebranding HTC handsets up until a few years ago. My very first HTC handset was actually the iMate JAM, which many of you may know as the HTC Magician. Over the past 2 years, iMate has been working on their own handsets with some interesting and unique features, but late last year; iMate took a turn for the worst and fired all their employees. We’re a few days out from CES and speculation is running high on the internet. It’s unclear what really happened within the company but now it looks like HTC might be stepping in. PhoneNews is reporting that HTC may be in the process or has already acquired iMate. The only conceivable reason for this supposed acquisition would be to secure iMate’s intellectual property since their handset market share wasn’t even a blip on the map last time I checked.
Unfortunately, the acquisition claims are based merely on the fact that HTC has put new contact information on their website under “CUSTOMER SERVICE AND PRODUCT SUPPORT.” To me, this simply indicates that HTC will be taking on service support for the devices that they manufactured over the years. Until I get any better evidence than that, I’d classify the HTC iMate acquisition as pure speculation.
