If you’re the proud owner of HTC’s first generation of Android handsets (HTC Dream and the HTC Magic), you might be asking yourself when your phone will be getting the latest Android update. HTC rolled out an Android 1.6 update last fall, but Motorola’s DROID is running Android 2.0.1 and the Nexus One (which should launch TODAY) is running Android 2.1. So where does that leave those who bought into the Android platform early on?
HTC, T-Mobile, and even Google have been silent over the matter. HTC has promised support for Android 2.0 for the HTC Hero and we’ve even seen some of the leaked ROMs already, but there has been no news on the Magic front. But now, Austria’s A1 has confirmed that they are planning on upgrading their HTC Magic to Android 2.0 this spring.
OK, I just got off the phone with the tech support people from my carrier (A1). They told me that it is GUARANTEED that the HTC Magic will be getting 2.0 and it will be pushed over the air to users on their network between March and April. Android 2.1 is ALSO guaranteed to be coming to the Magic on their network, but they do not have a fix date on that release – yet.
I can’t vouch for the guy who gave this information, but I can say that Andrew from Androinica wouldn’t pass it on if there was a credibility issue. Since the HTC Magic is essentially an HTC Hero with a different body, I see no reason why the handset wouldn’t get Android 2.0 when the Hero would. I’ll be meeting up with the HTC team at CES tomorrow, so I’ll be sure to bring this up to see if they have an official answer for us.

Hi, any further news about Android 2.0 for HTC magic??
Hmmm. Doesn’t sound a very convincing information source (“A guy on the phone told me that…”). I shan’t hold my breath.
