For a moment, potential HTC HD2 customers in the U.S thought they were special. Now it appears that all of HTC’s HD2 devices have that extra 128MB of RAM. There have been rumors of this floating around for a while, but new custom ROMs on xda-developers have been cooked up that free up the extra memory, brining the grand total to 576MB. I’m sure a lot of us are scratching our heads right now. Why would HTC choose to hide the extra memory on their top of the line device. It’s like a car maker putting out a new sports car and only telling consumers it’s top speed it 200 MPH when it can really go 220 MPH.
My conclusion is that HTC wanted to make sure that the HD2 was future proof, giving it enough memory to handle Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Mobile 7, but without raising customers’ hopes too much. Microsoft is expected to give us the first demo of Windows Mobile 7 at Mobile World Congress in a few short weeks. Let’s hope by then that they give us launch dates as well.
