Interview with Peter Chou kills HD2 Android hopes, confirms Droid Eris

I know a lot of our readers are caught up in all the android hype these days, but we have to keep in mind that HTC has a lot more to offer.  The HTC HD2 is probably one of the sleekest phones HTC has put out in months.  The HD2 runs on Windows Mobile 6.5 and features a 4.3” capacitive touch screen.  Over the past week, other blogs have been reporting that HTC would be releasing an Android version of the HD2.  We chose to sit out on this rumor since there was no supporting evidence that we could see.  HTC CEO Peter Chou has chosen to put these rumors to rest as well by stating "technically, we could make the HD2 an Android phone, but I have to take care of Windows Mobile."

Now before you go away thinking that HTC is making a bad decision here, let me point out that Peter Chou is trying to make a clear distinction between their Android and Windows Mobile offerings.  The HD2 is a revolutionary handset for Windows Mobile, so simply adding Android to the current hardware would be detraction from the handset which HTC is hoping will make them a lot of money.

This is not to say that the rumored Snapdragon powered HTC Dragon Android phone will not become a reality.  Peter Chou simply pointed out that the HD2 is a Windows Mobile phone.  Any other HTC phone with a Snapdragon processor and similar sized screen will be have its own name and should be treated differently.

In the same interview, Peter chou also revealed that they DO have an Android phone heading to Verizon Wireless the first week of November (HTC Droid Eris) and that they currently are not planning on releasing any netbooks, tablets, or e-readers.
