With all the buzz about Web OS, Android, and the iPhone 3.0 update, Windows Mobile seems to be lost in the crowd. The mobile OS is still quite strong, but is in danger of losing significant market share in the coming months. Fortunately for Microsoft (and us), they have finally marked May 11 as the official release date for Windows Mobile 6.5, a few months earlier than initially expected.
Windows Mobile 6.5 is more of a facelift than an actually OS upgrade. The new (some may call it improved) UI features a Zune life home screen, larger buttons and icons throughout the OS, and a much improved Internet Explorer. All these enhancements give users a better experience if you are using your fingers to swipe through your emails and calendar entries.
Keep in mind, just because WM6.5 will be launching on May 11, that does not mean you will be seeing any phones running it immediately. HTC has promised to offer ROM upgrades for the new HTC Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2, but most service providers will not be offering official ROM upgrades to current WM6.1 phones. We’re still hoping that the big boys over at Microsoft can get Windows Mobile 7 out the door soon. WM6.5 is nice, but not enough when it’s compared to the competition.
