Apparently, HTC is thinking that the U.S. market is ready for some lower end Windows Mobile 6.1 handsets. We first learned about the HTC Opal a few months back. It’s basically a re-hash of the HTC Touch (mostly the same hardware) but runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 and uses HTC’s dumbed down version of TouchFLO 3D, TouchFLO 2D. At the moment we are still not sure who will be carrying the Opal, but the GSM/EDGE connectivity and support of the 850 and 1900MHz frequencies gives us a good indication that T-Mobile or At&t customers will be the lucky winners. Feel free to check out the HTC Opal on the FCC’s website.
We’re willing to speculate that once the HTC Opal hits the streets, the price point will be just right. Currently the Sprint Touch is selling for the low price of $49 with a new two year agreement. I can’t imagine the Opal going for more than $150 since it’s essentially the same handset with a fresh new interface.
