Rumor: HTC smartwatch coming in February

Roughly 12 hours after we casually mentioned the HTC smartwatch in yesterday’s HTC Smart Scale article, @evleaks hit Twitter with the news that HTC may finally be ready to release its watch early next year. The tweet refers to the device as the “One watch” and claims it will show up in February.

With Mobile World Congress scheduled for the last week of February, it’s safe to assume that the HTC smartwatch will be unveiled at HTC’s press event one or two days before the show floor opens on February 22. As far as the name goes, the device could launch as the HTC One watch.

Previous HTC smartwatch rumors

If you haven’t been following the HTC smartwatch rumors – here’s a bit of background. Back in 2014, there were multiple rumors floating around that HTC was working on more than one smartwatch. Later in the year, HTC announced that it would launch a smartwatch by the end of 2014, but that device never materialized even though a prototype of the watch made an accidental appearance in one of HTC’s design videos. HTC claimed that it killed the project since it wanted to offer a device that was truly unique.

In early September of this year, HTC smartwatch rumors resurfaced, claiming that HTC was working on an Android Wear device with a 360 x 360 circular display. Codenamed HTC Halfbeak, the HTC smartwatch will likely feature many of the same specs as the current generation of Android Wear smartwatches from Huawei, LG, Fossil and Motorola. The real feature which would set it apart from the competition would be full integration with UnderArmour Record and a durable sporty build which would make the HTC One watch the must-have smartwatch for athletes.
