HTC One M8 Double Dip case review

The Double Dip case was first introduced with the HTC One M7 and gave the phone an added splash of color to an already exciting phone. The case was a unique offering for the One M7 and came as no surprise that it would be available for the HTC One M8 as well. The thin three piece case is under $20 and is a step up in protection compared to the SlickWraps skin I reviewed earlier this month and takes less effort to install.

Price: $16.07

Design

The Double Dip case for the HTC One M8 is made up of three parts, but the contents of the packaging includes a single blue back shell that has a cut out for the main camera, flash, mic, and volume rocker, two top pieces (one grey and one teal) with a cut out for the Duo lens, power/IR blaster, and mic, two pieces for the bottom (one grey and one red)  with a single cut out window for the audio and USB ports. The extra pieces allow you to mix and match the puzzle-like case so you can come up with your own design. I think it should be called a triple dip case given all the options this one case has for a playful and unique look. I like how the rear camera and flash have their own holes so there’s more of the case to enjoy. I two different options to chose from if you buy this case. One was very greyish and had mostly grey components. The other is the one I reviewed and talk about the most in this article.

Protection

There is limited protection with the Double Dip case for the HTC One M8. The case provides a thin barrier which is nice, because it’s not bulky to hold, but scary when thinking about an impact to the ground and what damage that could cause. I’m sure it would prevent scratches to the back of the phone, but I image the exterior would end up with a dent or at least some markings. Also, the two ends of the case don’t firmly interlace into the main body of the case. The top and bottom pieces have three slots that interact with the main body, but they disassemble easily and I’m willing to bet that hitting the ground would cause them to fly off leaving the phone vulnerable to scratching or worse on the exposed surface. The screen doesn’t have any protection except for a slightly raised area around the front bezzle of the phone so don’t expect this case to defend the screen at all.

Use

This case is good for adding a thin, colorful layer of protection to your phone. I like how the cut outs are fitted to match most of the components like the camera and flash giving the case the custom designed feel versus a big window to fit a bunch of stuff in it and leave things more vulnerable to disaster. At least this case is one of the easiest to take off and put on for the times you needed to mount it to your window mount or give it a quick wipe down, etc.

Final Verdict

The Double Dip case for the HTC One M8 is a light, colorful, playful case that adds a visual aspect while protecting your phone on a minimal level. This case would still be better than a naked phone so if you are looking for a thin barrier this could be the option for you.
