Rumor: HTC working on waterproof action camera to compete with GoPro

We always love a good rumor, but we were a bit surprised this morning to hear that HTC is looking at a brand new product category that. Bloomberg is citing an anonymous source, claiming that HTC has plans to release an sorts action camera that will compete with GoPro.

The HTC action camera will feature a ultra wide-angle lens, 16 megapixel sensor, Bluetooth, WiFi and will be able to connect seamlessly with Android and iOS devices. The design of the HTC action camera will be cylindrical and we suspect it will have a much better industrial design than any of the product in GoPro’s lineup. The source of the rumor says that the HTC camera and a HTC’s upcoming selfie phone may be unveiled at HTC’s October 8th event in New York.

HTC has been struggling to compete in the smartphone space over the past few years, so it may be time for the company to spread its wings by offering a wider array of products. HTC is still the only major smartphone manufacturer that only builds mobile devices. Samsung, Sony, LG, Apple, Lenovo and Huawei all have a deep and diverse product portfolio which help them improve operational efficiencies and keep production costs down. The HTC action camera may be HTC’s stepping stone into a dozen other product categories over the next few years.
