Google announced Android wear platform, HTC smartwatch expected later this year

Google certainly didn’t invent the smartwatch, but it’s hoping to take the lead in the most popular wearables segment with the introduction of Android Wear – a platform with an intuitive UI which can allow for an “ecosystem of watches in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes.” Think of Android Wear as an extension of Google Now on your wrist, but with interactive notifications from other Android apps as well.

HTC, Asus, Samsung, and others are already working with Android Wear and are expected to have device on the market by the end of the year. HTC confirmed that the company was already working on a device in early February with a planned launch which would get the device on consumers’ wrists by the holidays.

While Android Wear will dictate what the smartwatch user experience will be, HTC should have full control over the design of the hardware. HTC has always been on top of the charts when is comes to smartphone design, but we do not know if that experience will translate well into something as intricate and personal as a watch.

Do you think HTC will find success with Android Wear?
