HTC unveils the HTC J Butterfly for Japan featuring a 5-inch 1080p display and quad-core S4 processor

Let us introduce you to the HTC J Butterfly, the world’s first Android phone with a 5-inch 1080p display.  We’ve heard rumors about a Verizon-bound device with many of the same features as the HTC J Butterfly, but it looks like our friends over in Japan will be the first to actually get their hands on the phone.

The HTC J Butterfly features an impressive array of specifications. HTC has equipped the handset with a 5-inch 1080p Super LCD 3 (the first of its kind), a blazing fast 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor (MDM9615 + APQ8064), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot which can add an additional 32GB of storage for all your media. The only item on the spec sheet which is a bit disappointing is the HTC J Butterfly’s 2020 mAh battery.

While the display on the HTC one X has been regarded by most tech blogs as the best 720p display on the market, several sources are already claiming that the 1080p Super LCD 3 display on the HTC J Butterfly easily outclasses it.

HTC J Butterfly spec highlights

  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Sense 4+
  • 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro + MDM9615 modem
  • 16GB of storage, 2GB RAM
  • 8 megapixel camera with a f/2.0 lens, 2.1 megapixel front camera
  • 2020 mAh battery
  • Beats Audio
  • MicroSD card support
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC
  • LTE support
  • 71 x 143 x 9.1 mm, 140g

HTC has not yet released any details on the HTC J Butterfly’s price or launch date. The HTC J Butterfly will not be make available outside of Japan, but HTC claims that the 5-inch 1080p Super LCD 3 display will be showing up on other HTC phones in the near future – heading us to believe that Verizon’s HTC DLX announcement could be right around the corner.

  1. Fantastic…. Finally, a phone that would allow me to head BACK to HTC. When HTC dropped microsd support on the HTC One series. I had no choice but to stop purchasing HTC phones. I purchased an Samsung SIII instead. For the most part I’ve been quite happy with the Samsung, but I miss my HTC experience. I’ll be looking forward to this or a similar phone making it to the US shores.

Thanks to HTC for listening to us. The repeat customers looking for flexibility as well as power and video.

    1. Absolutly agree. That’s the way HTC shoud go. Even without so incredible full HD display -> SD slot and more ram, I love it.

  2. For a second I was thinking of buying a Samsung Note. Now I am happy to see I have something to wait for from HTC. Finaly the external microsd card is back 😉 And also a big screen to work with. Now, I only have to wait till I can buy it in The Netherlands. Keep up the good work HTC.

  3. If the rumors are correct this will show up in several reincarnations:
HTC J Butterfly – Now confirmed for Japan.
    HTC DLX – With Verizon.
    HTC Nexus 5 – As a Google-Nexus-Phone.
and HTC One X5 – Directly from HTC

My pick would be the HTC One X5 with HTC Sense.
With the now confirmed microSD-Slot the 16GB of memory are absolutly ok and otherwise its the perfect phone at this time. 2GB of RAM are also a nice and important upgrade from the 1.5GB that were rumored. with those specs this phone should even be “good” in a couple of years…

I’ve read that people think that there will only either be a Nexus 5 or an One x5. I don’t agree with that. HTC Nexus One and HTC Desire were very similar too, with the biggest differences beeing the Desire to have the advantage of HTC Sense, whilst the Nexus One had the faster Update cycles. I have the feeling history will repeat itself there…

    1. Finally someone who feels the same way / knows about this phone + the speculations properly. I really hope the nexus version comes out, since that will probably ensure worldwide roll out soon after announcement on the 5th of November if it does in fact come out.

I’m just hoping we get the HTC One X 5 or the HTC Nexus 5. Same as the J Butterfly, but possibly with a larger battery – removable battery would be fantastic – i couldn’t care less about it being waterproof, still with a micro sd card slot, and a better camera – the new 13mp sensor would be nice.

I just cancelled my Note 2 order, and now just hope it was for something worthwile.

    2. Only thing that might be incorrect is if the new nexus program does allow dual boot (vanilla and a slightly skinned w sense Android) then the nexus 5 and one x 5 would probably be just one phone. That’s what I’m hoping for. oh and in the nexus rumors it was 64g internal with no microSD slot.

      1. “in the nexus rumors it was 64g internal with no microSD slot”
That would be fine too. If Internal storage is less than 32GB I NEED a microSD-Slot, with 32GB internal storage and above I can easily forfeit a microSD-Slot. It is just a nice thing to have then.

        1. See, this is where I have to respectfully disagree. Why is it okay to forfeit the microsd slot? The purpose of that slot is to allow me to quickly and easily make files available to the android system. I have a 32gb card which is full, mostly music and video. If I have to transfer the data off the card and then transfer it again to the internal memory of the phone, that’s a significant amount of time. If the internal memory grows to 64gb, it becomes even more cumbersome. With the microsd I can even pull the card and continue copying files even if I take the phone and leave the building to do something else. It’s just very inconvenient to remove that microsd slot and I, for one, will not buy a phone without one.

          1. I have only programs. Games and other software. I have no memory left anymore.
I had to deleted a few games to gain a little space. So I need more space. Or else I can not take pictures or watch movies.

  4. I feel bad for Japan on this phone… Battery will only be 2020mAh.. Such a low spec battery for a Quadcore CPU and big screen!? People will be running out of juice very quickly on this phone… This issue is the biggest thing that’s holding me back from getting the phone. Because the phone is water resistant, it’s not easy to replace the battery with a fresh one. In fact, because of this, I don’t think they’ll even sell an extra battery to the consumer because of this point. Aftermarket juicepak might be available, but who wants to carry around some bulky item..? Better to have a case/batterypak option, but I doubt we’ll see that.
Oh, and for those that worry, YES, you can insert your own memory card to up the memory (on top of phone right side).

    1. My dissapointment is about the fact that it has no Tegra 3 inside.
What to do when you have a lot of tegra games you want to take with you to the new device?
So my only option at the moment is the HTC One X+
