HTC comments on One X multitasking woes

Those of you with the HTC One X and the One S have likely noticed the way Sense 4.0 handles open applications deviates from the standard way they are handled in Android 4.0.  Instead of the standard vertical scrolling list of open applications, you see that same list in horizontal format.  On the surface, this isn’t an issue, but many users are posting on the XDA-Developers forum that many of these apps are terminating more frequently than expected and it is really starting to hinder the enjoyment of the phone.  HTC recently commented on the issue:

HTC is aware of some questions in the enthusiast community about how the HTC One X handles multitasking and memory management for background apps. We value the community’s input and are always looking for ways to enhance customers’ experience with our devices. That said, multitasking is operating normally according to our custom memory management specifications which balance core ICS features with a consistent HTC Sense experience.

After reading that, it appears the closing of apps is normal and there is no reason for concern.  HTC’s statement makes me apprehensive about migrating to a HTC One device.  I’m all for long battery life, but I’d rather know it was due to a healthy-sized battery in the phone and not because applications I wanted to remain open are instead being closed.

Have you noticed any apps you thought were running have actually been terminated?  If so, there is always the option of switching to a different app launcher or rooting your phone and installing a custom ROM.

  1. I wish they would comment more specifically…some people found that running an app that used webkit (such as the stock browser) seemed to be what triggered the memory issue. The workaround was to run firefox or opera as your browser instead. It’s a little silly, since this problem doesn’t exist on older HTC phones, like the Rezound.

  2. have had my One X for nearly a month now and had no issues with the applications closing on me. perhaps as Brennan said it only happens in specific situations….

  3. I have the unlocked tegra 3 version, the problem has been rectified with an OTA update from HTC version 1.29.401.11 multitasking is working fine on my device, no page re draw when opening multi tasking tabs.
