HTC announces new ‘Studio’ to focus on key launch devices

HTC has announced that it is creating a new department, dubbed ‘Studio,’ as a first step to halting their recent slide in profits.  This new team will consist of designers and engineers and reports directly to HTC’s CEO, Peter Chou.  To help turn things around, the Studio team will focus on “key launch” products and will have a  more “open mind on components” then they have in the past. CFO Winston Yung stated:

[We] want to make sure that we do have multiple sources for a single component. So we have, I think, a very good range of suppliers to choose from on CPU, for example.

Yung believes that using a broader scope when selecting components will help the Taiwanese company “regain the edge in products.”  This are interesting statements as HTC has been known to work primarily with Qualcomm over the past few years.

The fact that HTC is willing to look at other sources for components should allow them the option to select the best components for their “hero” devices for 2012.  Hopefully we will start to see these devices in a couple weeks at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
